Trump’s Gaza relocation plan revives old wounds and regional resistance

As appeared in the Jerusalem Post . By   ALEX STERNBERG & DAVID S. LEVINE Trump’s proposal to relocate Gazans sparks Arab backlash—reviving decades-old debates over Palestinian identity, displacement, and the future of the conflict. US President Donald Trump recently announced his groundbreaking plan to rebuild Gaza and resettle its population in neighboring Egypt and Jordan. Egypt and the Arab world quickly condemned the Trump plan and proposed their own strategies for the “day after.” Their urgency stemmed from the fear that the plan might materialize, as reports emerged that over 35,000 Gazan residents have already left the enclave. By putting forth his plan, President  Trump joined previous voices advocating for the removal of a segment of the Arab population. It is crucial to take a moment to reflect on history to understand the background of such plans. Just who are the Arabs Trump seeks to relocate? In the aftermath of the 1948 War of Independence, ...

What Are Palestinian Demonstrators Ashamed Of?

Image
Also appeared on my Times of Israel blog.   By David S. Levine I ask this question as a former proud protestor and demonstrator (late 1960’s – early 1970s) and recently retired university professor. In just about every picture or video of pro-Palestinian demonstrators on the news today, nearly everyone is masked to hide their identity. Why? As a pro-Palestinian demonstrator, you support the positions of all those slogans you are shouting for your cause and know what they mean. Like “ jihad now ” and “ from the river to the sea .” Why are you ashamed? As an anti-Israel demonstrator, I am sure you read the founding charters of the Palestine Authority and Hamas , as well as the State of Israel ’s declaration of independence, and understand what they stand for. Why are you ashamed? As an informed demonstrator, of course you have read and watched the Arabic   articles and videos (translated or dubbed into English) from reputable sources like MEMRI , Honest Reporti...

The Rabbi who must not be named -- Rabbi Meir Kahane

This co-authored article was posted to Alex Sternberg's Time of Israel Blog .   It seems that for extreme liberal progressives, Rabbi Meir Kahane has become the “Rabbi who must not be named.” When Lizzy Savetsky, a pro-Israel social media influencer, shared a video of Meir Kahane discussing the realities of engaging with “real” Arabs in the 1970s and 1980s, it sparked a new wave of condemnations against him as well as against Lizzy. Most people today know very little about who Rabbi Kahane was and what he represented. Assassinated over 35 years ago in 1990, many individuals who now express unfounded opinions on social media were not even born when Kahane founded the Jewish Defense League in 1968. We, on the other hand, worked closely with Kahane and the JDL from 1968 to 1972, during the tumultuous four years that shaped the identity of the militant group. We spent our days and nights with him, sometimes even sharing a jail cell. We got to know him well. We a...
